In a traditional white collar setting, opportunities were limited by physical access, such as face to face transactions, visible cash handling, and paper records. With the use of digital systems, employees are capable of changing data. Examples include altering financial records and duplicating digital assets. These actions can be done now without dealing with people looking over your shoulder and seeing what you are doing.

The line between white collar crime and cybercrime is blurred when employees use legitimate access in illegitimate ways. For example, an IT administrator may have authorized access to a company’s database. But they can take advantage of that access and use it to steal customer data and sell it. Another example is an employee who works in payroll. They have the ability to give themselves a little extra money than what they have earned. They can do this by using their knowledge about the system and finding loopholes to avoid being caught.

Anonymity plays a huge role in shaping decision-making. Digital actions feel less risky because they lack the visibility of physical crimes. People stealing from a cash register deals with direct exposure, and a higher chance of getting caught. Now, most companies like fast food and retail, have cameras over their registers in case any stealing happens. So stealing directly from a cash register would almost always get you caught. However, manipulating data records can be done behind a screen, with sometimes leaving traces that may not be noticed immediately or ever. This perceived distance lowers the psychological and practical barriers, which makes the potential rewards seem greater than the risks.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Payne argues that computers have not changed why people commit occupational crime, instead they have changed the ways they can do it.
