In 2012 the NFL had to deal with the infamous bounty gate scandal. This was an incident in which members of the New Orleans Saints were accused of paying out bonuses for injuring opposing team players Gregg Williams was suspended indefinitely and Sean Payton was suspended the entirety of the 2012 season. After a lengthy investigation conducted by the NFL’s security department, the league announced the program runs in violation of league rules. The NFL Players Association released a statement in which it promised to look into the NFL’s allegations. Health and safety is a paramount issue to the NFLPA,” the statement said. “The NFLPA was informed of this investigation by the NFL earlier today and will review the information contained in the league’s report.” The NFL ultimately broke the story first in order to get out in front of the scandal.
