The two economic theories that relate to this security breach letter are the rational choice and Laissez-faire economic theory. Rational choice is the business’s ability to make choices in its best interest. This relates to the article by showing how the company hired the “leading cybersecurity firm” to remove the malware from its systems so they can get back to their usual business. The laissez-faire economic theory suggests that the government should not intervene in the economy except when it needs to protect people’s rights. Some people would say that privacy is a right and that the government should be able to intervene in companies if it is to protect people’s privacy. This relates to the security breach letter by showing how law enforcement told the company to not release the announcement that the customers had had their data stolen.

The two social sciences theories that relate to the letter could be cultural studies which examines how culture shapes communication practices and media representations. This could relate to the letter because if they did not release a formal letter to the customers then it could be seen as bad in the public’s eye and that could hurt the business’s reputation. Constructivism is another social science theory that could relate to the article. Constructivism states that individuals learn about things through experiences and interactions. This relates because people who ended up getting their data stolen may never shop on that website ever again, in fear of getting their data stolen even though it is unlikely.
