How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
Technology has opened many avenues for people to cause issues because with the convenience and tools that we have available to make our lives easier, it also can cause havoc and mayhem if they so choose, and they can do so at the comfort of their homes as well. One of the easiest ways to cause disruption in a professional setting is to not follow proper procedures for online safety while using a workplace computer and browsing unsecured or unencrypted sites which will put the entire professional network at risk for a potential attack. Another example would be an employee purposefully shutting down firewalls to gain access to restricted sites while on the network, this sort of behavior puts not only the company at risk, but it also puts their clients, customers, and everyone at risk as well for data breaches.
It’s also much easier now for people to use workplace chat groups to cause problems such as bullying other personnel, causing disruption to the workflow by being a nuisance and not working, and other behaviors that are overall negative for a positive work environment. Anything that distracts from getting tasks done efficiently and causing problems and distractions for others is a type of workplace deviance and companies relying more on digital communications and systems than ever, it is even easier for people who lack regard for others to cause those disruptions.
