SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Activities outside of classroom:

  • Watching movies on Netflix in Spanish, switching language from english to spanish. I have seen Encanto and Coco nuermous timesin both english and spanish.
  • Using a spanish dictionary to learn new and more words in Spanish
  • Communicating with patients at work in Spanish, using the knowledge I have learned from both Spanish I and II.
  • Trying new dishes at my favorite authentic mexican resturant in Williamsburg, VA. I tried Pollo Asasdo Tacos & Plato de Carne Asasda.

Reflection

This semester I grasped more knowledge and the apporpriate way to speak in the Spanish language. Spanish II was definitely a challange for me, I learned how to use contact clues from questions being asked, to help me answer the question correclty, as well as skim reading a paragraph to help me understand what is being said. I still struggle with using English when having conversations. I tend to go blank when questions are being asked, because I overthink them, and forget to use my contact clues. I feel I did much better this semester, opposed to last semester when I was enrolled in this same course. In the beginning I was understanding all the material, with making minor mistakes. Towards the end I started to struggle, because the conjagations began to differentiate. In the end, I feel I could’ve worked just a tad bit harder to get a much higher grade, but learning a new language is not suppose to be easy nor are you going to get it on the first try, it takes time and practice.

Exploring Culture

Learing about the Spansih culture this semester was definitely interesting. I learned the proper way to conjagate verb, adjectives, etc., the proper way to speak and pronouce words in Spanish, learn about their culture ranging from countries signature dishes, flags and family traditions. The most challenging thing forme personally is not being able to role my r’s or fully say the word how it sounds. I had realize that Spanish is not my first language and it was just be hard to adjust to learning something new, however a good portion of the spanish language is relavent to English. Some words are spelled similar or just able to same as words in English. Which is very helpful when you are learning new vocabulary.

Engaging in Communities

My engagment in communites includes me communicating with patients at work who do not understand English, and only understand Spanish. Even though I struggle with hold converstation and remember certains. I try my best to use on worded, words in Spanish that I know to help the patient understand what I am asking them.

Interpersonal Communication

For this semester we had a variety of activites that requires interpersonal communication such as, Talkabroad, which is a website where you communicate with people all over the world, specifically for this class individuals who speak Spanish. Another activity was dicussions boards/posts, which were dicussion activites between our classmates. For the assigments were were given a topic, that consisted of us watching a video or answering questions, and posting out opinions whether we agreed or disagreed, as well as replying to other students.

Can-do-statement

  • I can start a conversation without hestiation
  • I can tell someone my name.
  • I can greet and take leave in a polite way.
  • I can tell the customs official which countries I visited.
  • I can tell someone if I understand him/her.
  • I can say what sport I play.
  • I can say what food I like or dislike.
  • I can say if I agree with someone about basic preferences.

This is my goal: My goal is that I propertly answer and ask the following questions without hestaition and confidence.

I can do this with help: While having conversations, I will say I ask for help if I dont understand something, but having someone repeat a few times, I slowly start to undestand what they may be asking me.

I do this consistently: Honestly, I would not say I having conversations in Spanish consitently, but being enrolled in this class and practicing spanish through various assignements and having assigned work everyday help me become more consistent in what I was learning.

I have provided evidence to demonstrate this: References back to the dicussion post assignment I completed provides evidence of my understanding.

Presentational Speaking

Talkabroad 1: La Familia

In this audio, it is the perfect example of me using more english, than spanish in my conversation. I picked audio, because I can see growth in the furture from listening to it. Another factor I can grow from would be answering the questions according to what my partner was asking. I think I held pretty decent with my partner, I wish I would’ve minimze my use of english and using my contact clues to answer the questions correctly.

Can-do-statement:

  • I can say my name, age and where I live to introduce myself.
  • I can say my phone number, home address and email address.
  • I can say some activities I do every day.
  • I can tell the names of places I go on the weekend.
  • I can state my physical or personality traits.

Presentational Writing

For this assignment we were required to give our opinion family differences. I basically dicuss the roles and expections that are primarly done in a Hispanic household. I then followed up by describing the roles of which my family places in our household. This assignment was actually one of my favorites. I got describe and tells other how my family operates. It was actually interesting to see the few people who could relate to how much family was structured.

Can-do-statement:

  • I can list places I like to go to see art or listen to music.
  • I can create a simple chart of a few things I like and dislike.
  • I can label the things I like and don’t like in a picture.
  • I can write a list of desirable and undesirable characteristics of a friend.
  • I can list my favorite free-time activities to create a survey for my peers

This is my goal: My goal is to be able to describe the following with no mistakes.

I can do this with help: Using my notes have helped me when it comes to describing certain things, specifically the vocabulary.

I can do this consistently: I would say I am 50/50 in being about to describe my family, peers and what I like and dislike about certain things.

I have provided evidence to demostrate this.

Interpretive Listening

C:\Users\chair\OneDrive\Documents\Spanish 2 2023\Audio Assigment.mp4

Provided above is an audio assignment, which required us to repeat the Alphabet in Spanish, along with words that contain the letter and it correct prounciation. This assignment was actually helpful and replaying the correct prounciation helped me correctly say the letter, instead of making it up in my head or how I though it should sound. In this assignment, I was definitely challenged because a few of the pronucaitions were tricky and I had to replay to audio numerous times, before making my recording from memorization. Being able to memorize the alphabet make it a lot easier when it comes to pronunciating words in Spanish.

Interpretive Reading

Using assignment from online, LingroLearning. Towards the ends of each module we had the complete modules called “Exploracion Cultural”. Which basically was a people describing their lifetsyles, cultures, etc. For the assignment, I provided these few individuals were describing their lifesyles and what is popular in the countries they live in. I found these assigment (s) pretty challenging at times, because I didn’t understanding majority of what I was reading. The best way I understood what I was reading, but by using my spanish dictonary that I had bought prior to the class starting and referecing back to any vocabulary or grammar that was completed and dicussed during the following module. These assignemnt actually helped in terms of me being able to read a paragraph or two in Spanish, with no english.

Can-do-statement:

  • I can recognize names and titles in an email introduction.
  • I can recognize familiar place names in a brochure.
  • I can recognize greetings and leave taking words in an email.
  • I can recognize salutation words in a business letter.
  • I can recognize question words in a text message.

This is my goal: My goal is to be able to fully reading paragraph or short stories fully in Spanish and be able to understand every word.

I can do this with help: Using methods of skimming and idenifying key words have helped me identify and make a quick summary of what I am reading.

I can do this consistently: I wouldn’t say I could do this consistently, but with the short period of time completing these assignments, I have gained more of an understanding of they short paragraphs are talking about.

I have provided evidence to demonstrate this.
