How the media influences our understanding of Cybersecurity:
In the YouTube video attached to the module PowerPoint, hacker Keren Elazari analyzes and rates the accuracy of various hacking scenes in movies based on realism. According to her analysis, some of the scenes that were given poor ratings for accuracy were due to the fact that most of the hacking being shown is done in a matter of minutes or seconds, when in reality the process takes hours, days, or weeks. Some of the scenes shown were rooted in science fiction, and make hacking look much more simplistic and immediate than the process actually is, which can influence viewers understanding of Cybersecurity. Since the internet has become a crucial part of most peoples everyday lives, the idea of a hacker being able to effortlessly gain access to passwords or other forms of information in a matter of seconds is enough to raise concern to many internet users. Other forms of media such as news outlets report on cyber issues, and may lead people to believe that cyber threats are more prominent than they actually are. While internet users should certainly be aware of potential threats to cybersecurity, the idea that the internet is completely unsafe is often a myth perpetuated by media and news outlets.
