How should we approach the development of cyber-policy and -infrastructure given the “short arm” of predictive knowledge?
Cybersecurity and National Critical Infrastructure are both extremely important for national security, as well as the well being for all members of society. If infrastructure systems are corrupted, this could lead to the tampering of water, energy, nuclear, and many other essential forms of manufacturing. To lose control of any of these essential forms of infrastructure would be catastrophic to the nations safety and security, and could open the nation up to further attacks. According to previous module content, most security systems utilized in infrastructure systems are five to ten years behind modern IT systems. This draws attention to the idea that engineers and cybersecurity professionals may not be entirely on the same page, supporting the idea that the two fields need to be more closely coordinated for the best possible results for protecting infrastructure. With all of these factors at play, it’s essential we become more proactive in identifying and addressing potential vulnerabilities within these systems. With all the potential issues regarding loss of critical infrastructure, the rise and development of artificial intelligence systems have made it possible to use them in infrastructure for improving risk management, incidence response, and predicting cyber risks. According to an article published on the Cyber Management Alliance website, “Predictive artificial intelligence can scan through high volumes of gathered data to give you rational decisions when facing an impending threat” (Morris). This would allow for the development of more insight and ideas that can be used to edit or create new Incidence Response procedures. Predictive AI can also be used to help predict potential threats, and can even provide predictions regarding how often certain anomalies could happen if gone unsecure (Morris). Ideally, an organization with a strong human cybersecurity team paired with the capabilities of machine intelligence will be best equipped when predicting, facing, and preventing cyber threats to infrastructure.
