The Principles of Science and Cybersecurity(CYSE201)

Relativism, from a systems perspective, can mean that changes in one system lead to changes in other systems. This relates heavily to cybersecurity because as we continue to make rapid technological advancement, we also rapidly increase the amount of potential attack methods, and increase the attack surface, that attackers can use.  

Determinism relates to cybersecurity as it states that “behavior is caused, determined, or influenced by preceding events.” We could say that some data breaches or other attacks are determined/influenced by a previous lack of security awareness.

Objectivity is essential within cybersecurity as those within the field must hold objective viewpoints while examining potential uses of technology, and in examining why some use technology in the methods that they do.

Parsimony is important within cybersecurity as it states that “scientists should keep their levels of explanation as simple as possible.” While working in cybersecurity, many professionals may have to speak to clients or management that may not have the technical knowledge that they have, and they must be able to explain concepts in the simplest methods possible.

Ethical neutrality relates to cybersecurity as many cybersecurity professionals are faced with ethical decisions throughout their careers. When protecting confidential data, people in the field may be faced with the temptation to view files they should not access, whether from curiosity or for financial gain. 

Empiricism easily relates to cybersecurity as it essentially means that empirical data should only be used as evidence for a conclusion, instead of guesses or opinions.
