Module 9 Journal(CYSE201)

I scored 1/9 on the Social Media Disorder scale. Out of the 9 points, I scored on “tried to spend less time on social media but failed.” I deleted all of my social media accounts, excluding Reddit, a few years ago in order to combat some of the issues seen within the disorder scale. Of all the items in the scale, I think that they boil down to:

Do you have invasive thoughts of social media, are you or your relationships negatively affected by under or overuse of social media, and do you neglect responsibilities in order to use social media.

I think that all of the measures within the scale are the right questions to ask when attempting to gauge negative affects of social media usage as the answer to each directly determine whether or not social media usage is negatively affecting the user.

I believe that different patterns of risk for bullying exist throughout the world for multiple factors. The main factor being time spent online. I would agree with the Exposure theory that the more time spent on social media ultimately adds more risk of bullying and victimization. Another reason could be societal norms are different throughout different regions, and while one region may have efforts in place to curb cyberbullying others may not.
