Fake vs. Real Websites

Can we create three fake websites and three real websites and ask them to spot what makes them fake?

I believe that, depending on the experimental setup, some groups may be able to detect fake websites versus real. For example, if a group of technically savvy individuals such as IT workers or cybersecurity professionals were told that three of the six websites shown are fake, they would likely be able to identify the fake sites and why.

In another scenario, random people could be chosen and asked to look at the six websites. While some individuals may be able to identify the fakes and a reason or two why, I doubt that random people would be able to, with great efficiency, tell the difference between fake and real websites if the fakes are made with enough effort. The average computer user likely doesn’t pay much attention to the fine details of their login portals, and I would imagine would not notice differences. This is because inherent trust for even reasonably legitimate looking sites is incredibly high in most users. Most users pay little to no attention to login portals and are focused on getting past the login to perform the work they intend to do, instead of analyzing the site for legitimacy.
