Module 10 Journal(CYSE201)

After reading the article “Social Cybersecurity: An Emerging National Security Requirement,” I had a few thoughts. First, I found it interesting and wholly agree that “left unchecked, this emerging ‘information blitzkrieg’ will have strategic effects on par with the physical blitzkrieg unleashed at the onset of WWII.” As the world relies more and more upon technology and as it is used in more aspects of our lives, the power held within cyberspace grows and must be regulated accordingly.

I also heavily agree with this statement from Fabio Rugge, “Cyberspace is a powerful multiplier of the destabilizing effects of manipulated information because it allows high connectivity, low latency, low cost of entry, multiple distribution points without intermediaries, and a total disregard for physical distance or national borders.”

This statement quickly highlights all of the factors that lead to cyberspace having large potential for abuse through misinformation. I believe that one of the best methods to combat misinformation is to educate people on how to find credible information and how to spot misinformation. While more legislation may be on the way to combat misinformation, cyberspace has a “total disregard for physical distance or national borders.” I believe that no amount of legislation or reactive prevention measures will stop misinformation, instead we must teach people how to spot it themselves.
