SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

some of the practices I have embraced that have helped me gain understanding of cultural perspectives is trying to indulge myself in multicultural meals. I have always experienced different parts of my own culture in south Louisiana through food and I though what better way than to do the same for a new culture. I have tried to learn as much as I could about the construction of meals, their order, or even the day they are consumed. the food also allowed me to experiment in new flavors and textures not always found in traditional American dishes or in the cuisine of New Orleans.

the ability to try new cultural dishes and divulge ones self into a new culture is a privilege not many get to experience. try different experiences always helps you appreciate different cultures as you begin to understand a little more about their way of life. this experience aloud me to change the way I look at different sides of the world and will let me add new dishes to my at home menu. I believe if more people tried different pieces of cultures form around the world we would lose the sense of division when we discover we are mostly the same with a few regional alterations.

Engaging in Communities

the community of which you live is an extension of your person in every way, growing up in the south we quickly taught how to be one person of many in a community, always helping out even when not needed and caring for those who many not be as fortunate. the same goes for the world community, the more we all welcome in the more we will begin to solve many of the issues of division we experience on a daily basis.

Interpersonal Communication

in this semester we completed two oral communication examinations as well as various practices in class to aid in our learning of Spanish. we used descriptive and inquisitive vocabulary to communicate information on ourselves and others in our lives in a way to better get to know our class while also aiding in our understanding of the language.

in the past semester I have learned enough that I a.) no longer mispronounce Spanish terminology on a daily basis and b.) I have been able to communicate with friends about some things while using Spanish. it was quite difficult to get to this point but I my mind it was worth it to better understand an entire culture. it took time to lock down the meaning and pronunciation of each ending and term but in the long run each mistake made me more eager to learn

Presentational Speaking

In this class, we were tasked with making a presentation video on the campus and area we reside. we had to describe numerous buildings, why we go there, and what we like/dislike about it.

in the presentation, I had to alter a number of things about the way I speak to better adhere to this information I was giving. I usually speak very fast but ignorer for me to comprehend what I was saying I had to slow it down a bit and I also had to change the gestures I used when speaking. I quickly got better at the gestures and the vocabulary but pronunciation was still difficult because of where I was raised in the south we say somethings different. it took time and practice but I eventually got over it and was able to properly present my video.

the video presented is not allowed to be inputed into the eportfolio but can be found on lingo learning

Presentational Writing

in this course we have completed journals and stories relating to our activities, someone we admire, and where we are from. they have all lead to the completion of our profile on lingo learning and have helped us to better get to know our class mates.

at the beginning I was very skeptical as to if these assignments would actually help but then I began to understand that they would help apply the language to my every day life. I continue to struggle with the vocabulary and cases but I am slowly beginning to understand it.

Interpretive Listening

in our Spanish class this semester we were tasked with listening to many conversation recordings and videos to try and understand what the speaker was saying without seeing it on paper. this helps as you begin to understand how different dialects are pronounced and allows you to easily and quickly begin to adapt to language.

In this class I went to listen to Spanish music(since I have always learned better while listening to music). this allowed me to continue my education outside of school and immerse myself in the culture at the same time.

Interpretive Reading

being Able to read in a different language and properly communicating the correct tenses to your self in your brain in a very difficult task. in this class we have had to read letters, articles, and stories written by the lesson plans on lingo learning.

I think these lessons have greatly helped me better understand the language while challenging me to try harder to discuss each part of the language and the structure of the sentences. it have helped me in my pronunciation and let to my interest in Spanish literature.
