In the past 4 years, for me I have been struggling with confidence, my self-esteem, and my ability to do anything Cybersecurity related. I transferred from Virginia Tech, to ODU, to essentially avoid dropping out of college. Since then I have been doing college remote, by my self, with very little verbal or meaningful feedback, other than a “Good Job!” comment on an assignment. So when I began my Internship I was incredibly nervous. However, I quickly learned that I might not be on the level of some Tech people, I can hold my own, with my research skills, command line interpretation, and general knowledge of the Cybersecurity field. One thing though I still struggled with my soft skills, such as communication, and generally people skills.
Soft Skills
I have worked many jobs before my cybersecurity job, which were more customer facing than my current, this is where I learned most of my “people” skills, I was always a bit shy, but in certain jobs that is simply not allowed.
- Excellent presentation and communications skills to effectively communicate with management and customers. (Previous Job)
- Ability to clearly articulate complex concepts both written and verbally.
- Ability, understanding, and usage of active listening skills especially with customer.
- Excellent research skills, ability to find necessary and correct information for a particular problem
Solid Technical Foundation
Through out my college, I have done various programing classes and I have an understanding of how code is written, how to read it, but my self am not a programmer.
- General programming/software development concepts and software analytical skills
- Command Line experience and interpretation. (CYSE 270, Digital Forensics)
- SIEM and EDR production experience, with Microsoft Azure Sentinel, Microsoft Defender, Crowdstrike, SentinelOne. (Internshipt)
- Some experience with Java, Python, SQL, KQL, and shell scripts. (Virginia Tech and Internship)
- Understanding of how the different type of firewalls and network load balancers work
- Deep understanding of how network routers and switches work. (IT 315)
Detailed Knowledge of Key Technologies
- Linux Operating Systems (CYSE 270)
- Microsoft Technologies (Internship, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Defender, KQL_)
- Wireless Technologies (IT 315)
- Network Implementation (Operational and Security)
- Social Engineering (CYSE 201s)
- Physical Security
