Something I’ve learned from this course is the different perspectives people have on other cultures. Some cultures might have a negative opinion on how another culture does something. People don’t take the time to learn things about a culture before giving their opinion about what they do in their culture. Assignment Takeaway 1 helped me understand a different culture and how they do certain things different from my culture. It opened my eyes on how even though both cultures do things differently, we’re still the same people. Celebrating different holidays or having superstition in the culture doesn’t mean to have a negative opinion on the culture.
Another thing I learned was from Assignment Takeaway 2, when I talked about change. If you are stuck in the same cycle with culture and don’t change your views on a culture. You’ll be unable to grow your knowledge about the outside world around you. This helped me understand why certain traditions were important to a culture. This goes back to in ATA 1 learning about my boyfriend’s family and taking your shoes off at the door showed respect to the host of the house.
Finally, I learned about the two important values in my life that can help me shape myself into a person that explores my knowledge into different cultures and learn about them. One of them is purpose and it shows that I’m here on this earth to learn and knowing about different cultures can open other people’s minds about cultures.
A concept I learned was from my Psychology of Sex class and how there are gender differences. In cultures, it shows a lot of gender differences on what women are supposed to do and what men are supposed to do.

A need that I satisfy with autonomy is being the first person in my family to go to college and being able to graduate from college. With being a first generation in college is nerve racking because I don’t know what to expect from my college, professors, and my future. I couldn’t rely on my parents because they’ve never went through this. This motivated me to be the best I can be in college and make my parents proud.
Competence need is met with being a first-generation student. I’m able to learn knowledge that I wouldn’t have gotten if I didn’t go to college. This helps me be successful in my future career and college gives me different opportunities to build my knowledge and skills.
Relatedness is harder on me because I think I can’t relate to some classmates about having parents being an alumnus to a college. This usually helps people get into frats and sororities easily, while I would have a tough time getting into an organization without alumni parent.

When writing down my statements, I found myself more interdependent than independent. With being the only child, I learned a lot about myself on my own, but once I was put in relationships with people then that’s when I found my true self. My independent self is introvert and shy, while my interdependent is a loyal friend, outgoing coworker, loving partner, and responsible daughter. I believe I rely on my relationships with other in my life to show who I really am, and those people help bring that person out.
A proverb that I believe is independent is to find yourself, think for yourself and interdependent would be it takes two to tango. With figuring out proverbs for each, it was easier for me to relate more with interdependent over independent.

My two life values are purpose and hard work. These two values are very important to why I chose my career pathway. I believe I hav a purpose to touch people’s lives as a nurse and change people’s lives. But before I get to becoming a nurse I have to have my hard work value to reach my goal. Being able to put in hard work will know that I put everything I have to get to my goal. An experience I had at college was feeling like I wasn’t smart enough to be in college or get into nursing school, but I also told myself that I had a purpose and my hard work would help me strive to be the best.
I decided to continue higher education because I always knew I wanted to work in the medical field and being the first generation student in my family. This is a big reason hard work is an important life value in my life because I’m the first person in my family to reach a higher education. My parents were a big role in why I decided to continue higher education because I wanted to live out their dream of obtaining a degree since they never got a chance to do that. My parents want to make sure that I will be set for life and never have to worry about anything knowing I have all this education.
