The Alzheimer’s Association, the Southeast Virginia Community Chapter, located at 6350 Center Dr. Suite 102 in Norfolk, VA. There are seventy chapters across the United States. The Alzheimer’s Association is a not-profit organization and in fact the largest health voluntary organization in relation to Alzheimer’s. It was founded in 1980 by a group of individuals and the founding President is Jerome H. Stone. Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest under recognized public health threat with it being the sixth leading cause of death. There are currently 5.8 million people living day to day with this disease.
The mission of the Alzheimer’s association is to eliminate Alzheimer’s through the advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support of all affected, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Their overall goal as an association is to ultimately find a cure to Alzheimer’s through awareness, research, and clinical trials. The Alzheimer’s Association has six core values that it operates on and those are Integrity, commitment to excellence, inclusiveness, diversity, consumer focus and accountability. This association also relies heavily on their volunteers to get out and spread awareness about this disease.
