When viewing PrivacyRights.org, the first thing I noticed was that it states that over 20 thousand data breaches were reported in the US alone from 2005 to 2022. Checking the types of breaches on the site shows that hacks are the highest recorded type of breach with over 6 thousand hits with the second highest being from unknown sources at 5400 hits. As I was looking about the page, I noticed the chart relating to the organizations that had breach notifications and the top three organizations were St. Mary’s Credit Union, MutualOne Bank, and Main Street Bank. It’s interesting to see that the main type of companies that I’m noticing get security breaches are banks as I had thought that it had happened to medical practices as much as banks. I feel that researchers would use this information that’s on the site to inform companies, including banks, that they should work towards including some kind of classes to protect from social engineering and to help the cyber divisions within the companies to work towards strengthening the company’s firewalls and get them to help the employees to make stronger passwords. Companies would also be informed based on the different kinds of breaches and how to prevent issues with them such as card fraud and insider breaches. The researchers could also use this data to inform governments to make it a guideline for companies so that they can protect what they have from the inside and outside with stronger defenses on the outside of the building such as doors that only allow a single person in via a keycard that can be deactivated if someone were to be fired, and inside via antimalware and setting up restrictions for employees in the system.
