Health policies are very important to the safety and well-being of patients and employees in a healthcare setting. There are numerous amounts of health policies that have been written and are being written every day. Health policies constantly need to be revised and reviewed to keep up with threats to health that are evolving over time. I am excited to learn about the process of health policies and how to identify the key aspects that are vital to making them acceptable.

The second professional goal I have for my internship experience is to learn how to cooperatively work with other workers on staff. It is important to have great chemistry that will allow employees to perform efficiently for the organization. If there is no chemistry established in workplaces, then it becomes a negative outcome for both the organization and employees. I plan to show up with the right attitude and get to know the staff and build a connection that will allow me to produce work at an excellent level.

The third professional goal I have for my internship experience is to learn how to interact and deal with patients and customers. As a healthcare employee, a patient’s or customer’s health and experience are some of the most important values. Patients and customers should always be treated with respect and dealt with in a professional manner. It is also important that I build kind-hearted connections with patients or customers in the health field because dealing with health issues, especially personal health issues, usually requires more emotional support than other fields.

Activity Summary #1

For the first 100 hours of my internship at Dominion Pediatric Therapy & Associates, one of the first things I learned to do is operate WebPT, which is a software used to handle Protected Health Information (PHI) of patients. Dominion Pediatric Therapy & Associates utilizes this software to care for patients daily. Webpt offers a variety of ways to store patient information along with ways to update and distribute it with different departments within a health organization.

Dominion Physical Therapy has multiple offices at many different locations in the Tidewater area. For example, at Dominion Pediatric Therapy & Associates, there are employees who work in different departments, such as the front desk, occupational therapists, and billing. All these departments must be able to relay information between each other to be cohesive and function efficiently. Webpt allows these departments to do this by having a patient’s electronic documents, which contain their information about their location, treatment, therapist, or doctor. This E-doc enables employees to track their appointments, cancellations, and status. This is important specifically for their payments that must be made with their visits. Patients are able to make payments through insurance or self-pay.

One of the second things I learned during my first 100 hours is how to make insurance calls for patients. Patients will sometimes have payment errors on the WebPT system that need to be clarified by contacting their insurance providers. The process involves relaying the patient ID number and other verification regarding confidential information to identify which payments were actually made. Usually there are a set amount of units for insurance payment authorizations. This is one of the ways to identify whether insurance needs to be called for clarification on a patient’s payment. If there are any further issues with an insurance payment, an appeal can be made against a specific payment so that a health organization rightfully receives a payment for their service of a patient.

Activity Summary #2

For the last 100 hours of my internship, I learned how to update client billing information, shadow doctors, and do physical therapy technician training. In the billing version of WebPT a client’s insurance, payments, and balances are listed. In order to keep track of every client’s billing information, this information is moved into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. As business continues to operate, this information will need to be constantly updated with status checks. This is where insurance calls come into use, which I had learned in my first 100 hours. The client’s outstanding balance will need to be correct in discussion with the client’s attorney and insurance. The process of a client’s status update for billing can take longer, specifically when they are under attorney lien, because it involves more functions for a case to be settled. There are also cases where attorneys negotiate reductions with a health organization, which helps charge a client less money. Another activity that I did was shadow Dr. Jones, who is the owner of Dominion Physical Therapy & Associates. I was able to see how he handled clients efficiently and with professionalism. He mentioned that gaining the trust of a client is very important as well as being confident with your ability to treat them. Finally, one of the last activities I participated in during my internship was being in training for a physical therapy technician position. Technicians work more with clients directly by assisting them with rehabilitation exercises in order to strengthen their bodies. Many clients will be recommended by doctors or insurance to do physical therapy before attempting surgery or other treatment options that could be more expensive.

Resume Link:

UpdatedResume.Cameron.Cannon.12_06_25Download

About: Proffesional Goals: Activity Summary #1 For the first 100 hours of my internship at Dominion Pediatric Therapy & Associates, one of the first things I learned to do is operate WebPT, which is a software used to handle Protected… Continue Reading →
