Four majors related to Cybersecurity

The first major I’m going to talk about is engineering. When I first came to ODU as a freshman, engineering was my major. I knew I could do the work because I was good at math and science. However, after the very first engineering class I had, I knew I had to switch majors because I hated how boring it was. Engineering is related to cybersecurity because engineers use fancy technology to map out how they are going to build a structure or design a roadway. Cybersecurity helps engineers because they don’t have to worry about a terrorist getting ahold of their blueprints and figuring out the weakest points of their building.

The next major I will talk about is criminal justice. I chose this major because before I came to college, I wanted to be in that field but I changed my mind when I took a course about it in high school. Criminal justice is related to cybersecurity because they are fighting physical crime, while cybersecurity majors are fighting cyber crime. They go hand in hand because you use a lot of the same techniques to figure out who did the crime, especially since many criminal justice fields use technology to find the right perp.

Another major I want to discuss is psychology. I chose psychology because I took psych my first year at ODU and I fell in love with it. It is so fascinating. In another lifetime I would have been a psych major. Psychology is related to cybersecurity because cybersecurity is trying to protect your computer and information, while psychology is trying to protect your feelings and emotions. Psychology wants you to be able to live freely without worry of someone mentally breaking you down. Cybersecurity wants you to be able to live freely without worry of someone cracking into your valuable information.

The last major I’m going to include is accounting. I am discussing accounting because it is another major that I tried out here at ODU. I wanted to be an accountant because my mom was an accountant, but after the first class I was again very bored with it. Accounting deals with people’s money. You are making sure everything goes where it should and the check balances. You do not want anyone being able to get into your clients finances, so you would utilize cybersecurity to prevent that from happening. Cybersecurity would help to protect their assets and liabilities from being hacked by an unwanted friend.
