When I first read this question my immediate thought was that my major doesn’t relate to cybersecurity at all. My major is physical oceanography. I sat for a moment and thought, “what on earth could cybersecurity have to do with oceanography?” After thinking for awhile, it dawned on me. The Navy and Coast Guard both have close ties with oceanographers because they deal with national waters often and so do oceanographers. I then thought, “well, there are major cyber threats in the Navy and Coast Guard”. I finally came up with a response after piecing the puzzle together. When I become an oceanographer, I may decide to work with federal institutions or the military. If I were to work with one of these agencies, I would be worried about the threat of a cyber attack, especially if I had my own company. The Navy and Coast Guard use a lot of technology now that they did not use in the past. All of their equipment could potentially be susceptible to a cyber attack. When I am working with the Navy or the Coast Guard, I want to be certain that my hard work is not going to get lost or stolen by a vicious cyber attacker. That threat is greatly increased because of the fact that I would be working with a federal organization rather than just by myself. No one wants to steal your information unless they think they can benefit from it. Working with a federal organization, the increased threat of a cyber attack is due to the fact that people want to get information from the government. Cybersecurity is essential to my major because I want to be able to protect all of the research I collect for my company or the company I’m working for.
