Pronunciation

The Pronunciation section is the most basic section in ImmerseMe. It’s the section you see in my video of the Eiffel Tower on the previous page. It gives the user a set of possible things they could say so the user can practice pronunciation.

Writing/Dictation Preview

This section focuses on typing/writing the French language. ImmerseMe will give you a set of voicelines that the user must type out correctly, including accent marks.

Translation Preview

The Translation section is very similar to the Pronunciation section. It gives the user a set of possible voicelines, but this time it’s all in English. So not only does the user have to worry about proper pronunciation, but now how to translate the phrase from English to French.

Immersion

The Immersion section is the ultimate test in ImmerseMe. It inserts you in the convsersation with no tools or hints to help you out. This is a great way to test your skill so far, it feels like you’re actually in real-world conversation. If I were to go to France, I don’t expect to have any hints to help me out when I want to order coffee at the coffee shop.

Overall Reflection:

ImmerseMe surprised me how interactive it can be. The conversations span over a wide variety of topics, from talking about family to simulating to strangers on public transport. The settings also significantly add to the user experience, although some of the settings could be better. When I see things such as the Eiffel Tower, it’s stunning and really cements you into the French experience, but there are certain settings that are very boring which pop up far too often, for example, a classroom that doesn’t differ much from American classrooms. Occasionally, there are some vocab and grammar sections to accommodate the main 4. Honestly, these are the sections I gained the most knowledge from. I’ve said before that my biggest weakness is the limited vocabulary I have in the French language. I feel confident in my abilities to speak and write it, but those abilities are held back if I cannot find the correct word to fill in the gaps.
