Writing reflection One:

During the first few weeks of UNIV 150 I am already noticing a large amount of improvement in my writing skills. When I first came into the class I my expectation was to improve on grammar and punctuation in my papers. I always participate in class which gets me involved in the peer review making me more comfortable as a writer because when I am able to properly correct another writers mistakes, it makes it easier to understand the mistakes in my own papers. In class the professor also goes over many useful tips to make writing and editing papers easier. Another very helpful methode I have used to better my writing is the writing center and teacher review. At the writing center they will help you improve your papers and give you pointers to  complete the  final version of the essay. Although some say UNIV 150 can be a waist of time, I believe it is essential to take because it prepares you to write college papers and fixes all of your grammatical and punctuation errors.

The first essay was a good eye opener to the beginning of the class. I struggled with some grammar and sentence structure but because I was able to utilize all of the tools given to us such as the writing center and peer editing in class I was able to get a good grade on the assignment. The writing center was the best help I was able to get on the assignment because they helped me correct all my mistakes and give me ideas of what I could change certain sentences to so that it would make more sense. My biggest concern on the essay was that I was not aware that I couldn’t use the words “you” or “your” in a sentence. Even though I had some mistakes in essay one I feel as if I did a good job and I since I am aware of those mistakes it will help me do better on future essays.

Another big project I have worked on is the “Eportfolio” website. The website is used to house the assignments we have done in class. A major part of the website is used to house the journals I have written. I feel as if I am on track with the journals and keeping up to date on them. The personal web page also includes the progress of our essays and shows how I have grown as a writer.

Journals 1-5:

1) Living in a dorm is a big change for every student and everyone has different experiences living in one during the year. Many people get homesick, aren’t able to stay on track because they aren’t used to living on their own, and dislike their roomate. For me and my experience so far has been positive. In my lifetime I have spent lots of time away from home so I don’t get homesick and I am still able to focus on school because I am used to the feeling of being far away from home. I have also grown up with my roommate and get along with him very well so there isn’t any problems living with him. Living in a dorm also teaches you to keep your living space clean because if you keep everything organized it is easier to stay on track because you won’t lose anything. Having more responsibility is also dangerous for college students because you have to keep up with laundry, stay healthy, and maintain a social life at the same time. During my time in the dorm has made me a more responsible person and gave me the opportunity to experience what it is like to live on my own.

2) The student-teacher relationship in a classroom is very essential. When you have a good relationship with your teacher it will help the year go by faster and you will have a better chance at having a good grade in the class. Being able to ask your teacher for help will make classroom activities easier to understand giving you an advantage to finish the assignment on time. Another reason the relationship is so important is because the year will go by faster and your interacting more with the class. Classes will also begin to seem more exciting. While some people say having a good relationship is a bad thing and will label people as “teachers pets,” I believe a good relationship with the teacher is key to passing the class with a good grade.

3) There is numerous ways to pay for college, such as paying by yourself by using bank loans, parents or grandparents paying for you since they are more financially stable, or major corporations will sponsor your tuition to write it off their taxes. Lots of times students who go into debt by paying for college will stay in debt for most of their life, they have to spend a major part of their career paying off the education they needed to get into that work field. When you get college funded by your parents or grandparents you already have a step up in the game because when you are out of school, you don’t have any debts to pay off. Lastly when you get a sponsor to pay for college it doesn’t only help you, it helps them because it takes the money off their taxes which helps the company save money. Personally I think the best way to pay for college is to have your parents or grandparents help you out.

4) Your eighteenth birthday is one of the most exciting days of your life, you are becoming an adult whether you want to or not. With older age comes more responsibility, meaning that you are incharge of your own actions and outcomes of your life. Some of your new responsibilities may include not being used to paying your own bills/taxes, working, and being self sufficient. Paying bills can be stressful because they are expensive and take up most of the paycheck. Which is why you want to work hard, get a good job and be able to live the lifestyle you want to choose.  Being self sufficient can also be very stressful because you do everything on your own without someone to help you decide what to do, which also makes you responsible for your own actions. Even though there is a lot of new events coming into your life, I feel that turning eighteen is the best thing that can happen to you.

5) At Old Dominion University, the campus activities are endless. People are always active no matter what time of the day. You can do anything from sail boating, to rock climbing, even just hanging out with friends at a sporting event. Every Tuesday and Thursday there is also something on campus called activity hour where no classes can be scheduled so students can be active and socialize with one another. My favorite activity on campus is Sporting events, especially the football games. On the day of any football game at Old Dominion University there are activities all day. I tailgate before the game cooking food and hang out with friends. Then during the game the student section is crazy which is why I love attending the games. After the game is my favorite part of the day because everyone comes together and celebrates, even if we lose I still find a way to have fun afterward.
