The Human Factor in Cybersecurity

What is more important, cybersecurity or training? That is the question you’d have to ask yourself when discussing the allocation of funds in a business. There is no right or wrong answer and the truth of the matter is that it depends. It depends on what type of business it is, how much funding you have, and how much training is required to perform the job effectively. In my personal opinion, generally training is more important than cybersecurity because some cybersecurity can be incorporated into regular training.

Risk Assessment:
Before deciding to allocate more funds to training or cybersecurity you have to take into account how important cybersecurity is to your company. As said in the Risk Assessor article by Safety Apps Ltd “for each hazard you need to understand who may be harmed.” So if you are running a company that handles a lot of sensitive information in a digital format then cybersecurity would be more important, but if it relies on more manual labor then training would be more for safety reasons. Generally speaking most jobs have a cyber aspect but all jobs require basic training in order for new employees to function properly. So, proper training would be more important and receive more funding.

Cybersecurity Training
An important part of cybersecurity is the human factor. Making sure that your employees practice safe practices while online is essential to the security of the company. EnVista Corp said in an article “Cybersecurity training can help organizations protect their assets and mitigate risk from cyber attacks.” So teaching employees the importance of cybersecurity and how to keep the company’s information safe during training could be considered a part of training and cybersecurity.

Conclusion
Because humans are such a liability in cybersecurity it’s important to make sure they’re properly trained in cybersafety. Training is an important part of any job for the safety of employees, customers, and the company as a whole. Making the extra expense to properly train all employees in their regular job and company safety is a good investment to make. That being said, cybersecurity is also still very important and any money left over should be put towards the digital safety of the company. Whether that be new software, hardware, or any other implementation.
