Based off of “Technology and Responsibility: Reflections on the New tasks of Ethics” by Hans Jonas
Jonas describes the “short arm” of predictive knowledge as the limit of what we know about how the technological advancements we make today could negatively impact life tomorrow. With the rapid innovation of today, he old way of thinking that the advancement of technology is can bring nothing but good is just not applicable anymore. We have already seen and have been affected by what the people of the past’s careless use of technology have done to society and the very planet we live on. According to Hans in order to prevent harm to ourselves and the future of life on earth we must take into account all effects both good and bad our innovation could have. Particularly, in cyber-policy and infrastructure this means making ethical and transparent while acknowledging the unpredictability of technology. Jonas stresses the need for caution, regulation, and accountability while we continue to progress and develop technology for the protection of future generations from harm.
