This sample data breach notification relates to several economic theories and psychological sciences. Companies tend to prioritize their image over all else because how they make money has everything to do with marketing. This is where the theories of Rational Choice and Laissez-Faire come into play. The Rational Choice Theory is part of the reason why the company chose to delay notifying customers that there had been a breach, and the other part of why they delayed has to do with Laissez-Faire Theory, where they waited for law enforcement (the government) to respond to the incident before they acted on it. In fact, the company redirects blame to the government, the other company, and procedures in order to absolve themselves of guilt in the eyes of the customer. This is a part of neutralization theory where the company shifts blame to justify their actions, preserve their image, and keep the customers’ trust. After the customer reads this notification, the reader hopefully sees through these tactics and, in order to better protect themselves, uses the Behavioral Theory where they should learn from their mistakes and be more cautious of the sites they share their information with.
