Movies can be people’s first introduction to hacking and cybersecurity. In fact, the hacker in the video admits to being inspired to start hacking after watching the movie “Hackers” (1995). The media unrealistically portrays hacking as very fast-paced and intense. Despite their flaws, movies do showcase some realistic characteristics of actual hacking and cybersecurity. Especially basing thier hacking scenes on actual cybersecurity events such as the Miller and Valasek Hack that was featured in the movie “The Fate of the Furious.” Ultimately, despite their exaggerated portrayal of cybersecurity, these movies can promote better cybersecurity practices to massive audiences and encourage people like the hacker in the video to become cybersecurity professionals.
