How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?

Cyber Technology has created many opportunities for workplace deviance. An increased reliance on cyber technology has created an abundance of vulnerabilities for companies. Insider threat, both malicious and not, is at an all-time high. Unauthorized access to files is a huge issue, and it is not always the fault of the user. When I first started as an IT on the boat the standard operating procedure for creating accounts was to just copy a user that was in the same billet as the new arrival. What was never considered was that the user that we copied had collateral duties and the permissions required for that. This led to junior sailors getting access to exam banks and other information they should not have been able to see. While this was gross negligence on our part, and we were lucky to not have malicious intent from our users this could have led to a massive data breach. Negligence and complacency from the IT department is a major risk, albeit an easily avoidable one, is a risk companies take on in a virtual environment. Complacency and negligence are not problems limited to ITs though. Having worked in naval and shipyard environments the last 8 years and the carelessness I have seen around classified systems is astounding. Despite the annual cybersecurity training we had to do and the routine training we gave to the crew, cybersecurity was never a concern for the crew. People walked away from computers that were signed in and unlocked on classified networks all the time. People left IDs and smart cards lying around or usernames and passwords written on sticky notes were left lying around with civilians walking around on board. Actions like these leave the door wide open for people with ill intent to do whatever they want on the network.
