I believe the idea of social cybersecurity is one of the most terrifying things we are up against. This country is already so divided and easily manipulated that adversaries do not even have to try that hard. Let us use the social justice movements of 2020. The murder of George Floyd and subsequent protests were polarizing. As more police brutality footage came to fruition and more protests turned to riots the divide between the two sides grew ever lager. And as this divide grew, the disinformation spread. The entire ANTIFA conspiracy was used as a focal point. Between white supremacist groups, non-state actors and even the president, groups of peaceful protestors were demonized as an organization that existed purely to cause chaos and burn cities. This led to a lot of irrational hate toward people who just wanted to see much needed change in race relations in this country and an increase in open racism. When reading this article and comparing to experiences such as that above, the presidential election, the pandemic, etc., it becomes very apparent that this is a major issue.
