Safe:
- Computers allow us to handle business without every having to meet someone face to face. When it comes to commerce online stores allow us to order everything we need without ever having to leave our homes. Because of this most dangers attached to shopping, especially if you live in a high crime area are negated.
- The ability to quickly spread news in case of a dangerous event. On the Navy’s NMCI networks if there is a fire, shooting, flood, tornado warning or any other dangerous event, word is quickly spread through a desktop notification. My iPhone lets me know when I need to stay sheltered during a dangerous weather warning is in effect. These types of quick, automated notifications can keep people safer and in shelter during events that have potential to lead to casualties.
- At this point, most people have social media. When the world enters lockdown for diseases such as COVID-19, we are still able to easily communicate with our friends and family. This allows us to stay safe from diseases while also being able to speak to our loved ones.
Less Safe
- Cyberbullying is at an all-time high. This is a downside to the rise of social media. More people than ever can say whatever they want with few legitimate repercussions. Cyberbullying has led to a rise in suicide and feelings of inadequacy, especially in younger generations.
- It is easier to stalk people on the internet. Most users do not take the needed protections when building profiles to ensure proper privacy. Because of this all that is needed for someone to continue to stalk someone after being blocked is a VPN and a fake email.
- Because the internet has brought everything online, the need for a criminal to be present to commit crimes is no longer necessary. With the right equipment and skills someone can breach a system from anywhere on earth and steal money and or data.
