What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?

There is a lot of overlap between cybercrime and criminal justice. Cybercrime is crime carried out over the internet or network systems. Criminal justice is the discipline that oversees the creation of laws, persecution of criminals and rehabilitation of prisoners. Unsurprisingly, law enforcement agencies have had issues fighting cybercrime. The internet is massive and grows larger every day. As the internet grows, more areas, like the dark web, are used by criminals to hide activity. The dark web is an area of the internet that requires special software to access and is virtually untraceable. On the dark web, lots of heinous activities are conducted. Identity Theft, credit card theft, child trafficking, human trafficking and distribution of child porn are all prevalent on the dark web. Due to the dark web’s nature and the level of privacy that users can generate while on it, it is hard for law enforcement agencies to stop any activities on there. But these issues are not just related to the dark web. The normal internet that everyone uses every day is large enough that law enforcement agencies have issues stopping crimes. There are thousands upon thousands of scams running rampant on social media sites. Emails get filled with spam and phishing attempts. Moderators of social media sites like Facebook have their hands full trying to remove these from their platforms. The issue law enforcement offices face with these are much larger, trying to not only remove the attackers behind these pages but persecute when possible. This overlap relates to the elements of industrial security we talked about earlier this semester. While my response touches on the use of the internet and how everyday people are conned or taken advantage of, when it comes to the broader scale of SCADA systems, cyber criminals look to attack these systems as well. The dropping of a SCADA system can lead to a loss of an electrical grid or clean drinking water for a community.
