As the cybersecurity industry continues to evolve, different countries face different challenges. Rather than comparing the challenges faced in the United States to a rival country such as Russia or China, I thought it would be interesting to use a smaller country such as Panama. When it comes to development the United States is way ahead of the country of Panama. The United States has more complex standards and regulations set in place than Panama as well as the funding and infrastructure to support these standards. Panama, like most smaller countries, is trying to increase their standards to the levels of larger countries but it is a slow and costly process. Despite the fact that their cybersecurity standards are higher, does this make the United States safer than Panama? No. Per a study completed by Business Week and the Anti-Virus company Symantec the United States is the world leader in cybercrime followed closely by fellow world superpowers Russia and China. This is due in part to internet usage in the United States. The internet is widely available and affordable in the United States leading to a significantly higher usage rate than in Panama. The US holding the status of being a world superpower also leads itself to being more susceptible to facing cyber-attacks. This does not mean the threat level is nonexistent for Panama. They still face most of the same risks as pretty much everyone else, just with a smaller target on their backs. With that being said, the United States is far more capable of dealing with these attacks. The United States is proven to have a higher level of incident response preparedness, most likely due to the high rate of attacks experienced here. The United States also has been shown to have a higher level of public awareness when it comes to cybersecurity. Most professions require yearly training to keep cybersecurity at the forefront of thought.
