How can you tell if your computer is safe?

No computer system can be 100 % secure, but processes and procedures can be implemented to bring it as close to being secure as possible. One ways to protect your computer includes encrypting data at rest using cryptography. If the data on the system is encrypted it cannot be decrypted without the corresponding decryption key. Another method of securing a computer system is requiring the use of strong complex password. This makes it hard for attackers to gain access to a computer system. Also using a different password for each system and not re-using password can help with securing a computer system. Another method to secure a computer is to require multi-factor authentication. This level of authentication can include something you know, password or PIN; something you have, a token or access card; and something you are, biometrics like iris or fingerprint. Patch-management is another method to having a safer computer system. Ensuring the operating system and software are kept up to date to include antivirus software. Implementing a firewall which filters out traffic can also add to securing a computer system by making sure only approved packets are allowed into the network. Giving access and rights to only those who need it is important to keeping a computer system safe. This can be accomplished by assigning users to groups and assigning permissions to the groups. For example, if group A has read, write, and execute privileges, and group B has only read and write, if Megan is placed in group A, Megan now has the permission given to group A. Implementing these requirements can help to ensure data on your computer systems maintain its integrity, confidentiality and its availability to those with a need to know.
