Interview a Health Professional

Sonia Wiseman

Sonia Smith is an employee at St. Joseph’s Health Main Hospital in Paterson, NJ.

Her position/ job title is associated with the medical records of the hospital’s patients. Her responsibility is taking care of disability claims, she is associated with the courts when it comes to subpoenaing medical records of a patient, and she works with lawyers, insurance companies etc. Ms. Sonia was inspired to enter the field of work because of her grandparent’s. She says, growing up her mom would drop her and her brother off in North Carolina to spend the Summers with their grandparents. While being there, she enjoyed catering and nurturing for them, and it genuinely made her feel good and going there for the Summers made her realize what she wanted to do for work/career.  She says, being in the medical field is a commitment, and for anyone who doesn’t take it seriously or is in it for the money should find a different path, because the medical field isn’t for those who only care about the wind, but the loses and what’s in between. Ms. Sonia’s patients are the reasons why her day is made. She says that when they have a concern or an issue, having her patients come to ease knowing that Ms. Sonia will solve their concern without a hesitation is what makes her day and that is what’s most rewarding about her job. Fulfilling her patients is what makes her happy.
