Study Habits
My study habits have changed completely. Now, I study for at least four to six hours a day and I take breaks in between to make my day seem less stressful and with that method, I feel less forced to study. Then, I studied for one hour a day or sometimes I would skip studying, because I was confident that I would do well on my exams and quizzes. Plus, in high school I never studied, and I was a straight A student, but I shortly realized high school and college were two different concepts of education.
My study habits have changed because studying used to be hard for me. I did flashcards, I watched videos, I watched my professors’ videos and other websites that would help improve my knowledge on certain topics, but they never worked for me. What worked for me was hands on work and practice. I created worksheets and I did them to further advance and test my knowledge.
My fall semester of college, I have learned about the writing success center in the Perry Library. I wrote four essays my entire semester and having a second eye other than my professors was an easy and useful resource for me to access.
Study techniques I will use next semester are hands on assignments as stated above. I will create my own worksheets, I will use the website “quizzes” to create online tests and flashcards, and lastly, I will attend one on one tutoring for better understanding. There are plenty of opportunities out there for me to attain success in my major.
Health Professions Learning Community
In my eyes, Sociology, Interpreting American History, and Chemistry all have a connection in how we live ad humans. In each class we talked about many aspects of life that conclude and affect human life and beliefs. For example, in Sociology, we talked about culture and family. Culture and family can influence a person’s life negatively and positively. Sociologists say that someone without family presence is more likely to be depressed and socially inverted (less interaction with others.) In History, we talk about how events such as wars, amendments, etc. created our world today. For example, we in class talked about the spread of communism and how we the U.S. tried everything in our power to prevent the spread of it. The United States is democratic country, and which means all citizens have a say in what occurs within the property limits of the country. The Soviet Union were communist believers and did not allow their people to critized their government and how it was run. Chemistry also impacts human life, such as pharmaceuticals and synthetic materials given and provided in the world, creating societal change such as societal behavior and norms. My connection provided here between these three classes are connected to human life and the how is, why is and what is explanations behind the human life and upbringing factors.
Parallel Plan
The major that I was interested in was Speech Pathology. I was interested in the speech pathology, because I remember the guest speaker saying how it was elderly men and women who suffered from strokes who lost their sense of speech, and it remined me of this older gentleman at my job. I work at a Chick-Fil-a location in Virginia Beach, and I have a co-worker with speech issues; He cannot verbally get his words all out at once so it takes him a little longer to verbally finish his thought and what really makes me happy is that, when I go into work, I give him a fist bump every time and it really makes his day which makes me feel good. Out of all my friends I interact with him the most because, though it takes him a while to finish his thoughts, I enjoy our conversations. I cherish them the most because he is so fun to work with.
The benefit of having a parallel plan is knowing you have more than one option and having a backup plan when plan A does not work out. Now, I have all intentions of graduating college with my BSN in nursing, but I would love to have graduated with a minor in Speech Pathology. This major could benefit my intended major because it gives the people who will decide whether I become a nurse a chance to see that I have experience in a field related to nursing and that I am used to the life I want to achieve. It gives them notice that “oh this student has explored in Speech pathology and not just the nursing internships and volunteer hours, she’s done a different route.”
