Digital threats are consistently looming in our society where Internet connectivity and usage is paramount, not only in business but also for pleasure. With this reliance upon constant connectivity, there rises the issue of “safety” for users. Threats to security presents in an array of ways such as ransomware, viruses, phishing, and more. How can you tell if your computer is safe? In order to maintain a safer environment on your devices, it is important to utilize good practices. Passwords should not be replicated across sites or reused, and the use of strong passwords is critical. Passwords should not be easily guessed or common dictionary words and should contain a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. It is also important to keep your systems up to date. By not consistently updating your devices when updates become available, the risk of a vulnerability that has been discovered being taken advantage of becomes even more of a possibility. In addition to updating your personal software, it is imminent to only use secure webpages. Secure webpages typically utilize HTTPS. Another way to ensure your information is secure on a webpage is by utilizing websites that have obtained a certificate and never visit websites from links within emails. These links could be fraudulent and collect your login information in order to breach accounts and obtain personal information. If the question of security is still at hand after implementing a strong password, keeping your devices up to date, and using secure websites, it would be recommended to implement a firewall within your system to keep intruders out. Firewall settings can be adjusted in order to let in or out the traffic that you have deemed safe. Firewalls have become more commonplace in recent years, with presets available to ensure the safety of your devices.
