Cybercrime is a very popular avenue of perpetration, with hacking being devastatingly effective in its usage. However everyone does not share the same motives. Below is my ranking for how much sense each motive makes, in terms of hacking(not that any of these makes hacking a good idea):

  1. Multiple reasons – Given the general nature of this category, I included a set of reasons myself, such as rigor, the pursuit of intellect, and the drive to improve. These are kinds of people who will help you to be more knowledgeable about keeping your account safe rather than just compromising your data. The “bodybuilders” of the cyberworld, as they are incredibly strong and proficient, but help those who are weaker. Though hacking is still illegal, they are not attackers.
  2. Revenge – Revenge is not a good idea in nearly every conceivable case however, it is a better reason than most of the other options below it. Depending on what you are getting revenge on, the reasoning could be more understandable.
  3. Money – Everyone needs money to live, and stealing it is not okay, even if you think that the victim is rich and wont be affected. Unfortunately, it is way too easy to get away with.
  4. Politics – At the middle of the road is politics, where hacking to prove a point to the government for instance wont get you very far. Also, there was a national uproar due to Russians using hacking methods in order to sway the 2016 election in their favor.
  5. Entertainment – The first of the bottom 3 motives, where we finally have our truly idiotic reasons to perpetrate a cybercrime. Simply put, If you need to put peoples information in danger and expose personal data in order to “have some fun,” then you should reevaluate your life choices.
  6. Boredom – A very airheaded reason to do a crime. This is for people who apparently have no friends, no legal hobbies, no entertainment within a 50 mile radius, and only have a laptop whos only function is to hack into other devices. Simply far too many options to choose from as opposed to this.
  7. Recognition – Truly the most vapid, nonsensical, and moronic reason to hack into anything, especially businesses. Stealing information, breaking multimillion dollar security, destroying the feeling of an individual’s safety, all for some street credit. This is the equivalent of flawlessly robbing a store and turning around to spray paint your nickname and address on the wall before leaving. Luckily, the people bold enough to try this will definitely be recognized… by the FBI.
