The portrayal by the media concerning cybersecurity goes a long way in shaping the perception of people; this makes the lines between what is real and what is not very blurred. While others try to stick to the truth, some are modified to add dramatization. This perpetuates misconceptions concerning the actual rate at which hacking may occur and how this is visually displayed in regards to code and hacking. On the other hand, media plays a very positive role in introducing the concept of CTF competitions, spearphishing, and network scanning tools to the wider audience. The use of actual vulnerabilities and hacking techniques in films shows that sometimes the media will represent current events in cybersecurity. Overall, though media representations tend to simplify or dramatize cybersecurity, they also raise much awareness and spark interest in this field that might inspire some cybersecurity professionals in the future.
