Journal Entry 9

I scored 2 out of 9 on the SMD Scale, answering “yes” to questions 6 and 9. It would appear that I have some problematic patterns in my use of social media, particularly those dealing with arguments with others and conflicts with family or friends for not using it enough to connect online. Although my score does not reach the threshold level that would lead to an official diagnosis of a social media disorder, it does suggest that my use could lead to interpersonal problems. The SMD Scale assesses aspects such as preoccupation, tolerance, and conflict related to social media behavior with reference to the DSM-5 criteria for Internet Gaming Disorder. Such factors as cultural variations, technological access, socioeconomic factors, regulatory environments, and age may determine the different usage patterns of social media in various parts of the world. These factors come into play in shaping how social media is perceived and utilized across different contexts, and it’s of primal importance to understand such dynamics when looking at social media behavior.
