The article “Social Cybersecurity: An Emerging National Security Requirement” by Lt. Col. David M. Beskow and Kathleen M. Carley presents a compelling case for the importance of social cybersecurity in today’s digital landscape. The authors contend that the social media platforms have emerged into a new battlefield where the adversaries conduct information warfare. The sort of adversaries manipulate information on such channels with a clear-cut aim of erosion of national security. They pinpoint that this requires a multidisciplinary challenge which can jointly articulate the fields of computer science, social science, and psychology together. The article also focuses on devising new tools and methodologies that may help in detecting, analyzing, and countering social cybersecurity threats; among them are advanced bot detection techniques and social network analysis. The authors further stress that military personnel and civilians should be made aware of such emerging threats to engender resilience in the face of social media manipulation. All in all, the article illustrates quite well the urgent need to increase attention and resources dedicated to social cybersecurity as an integral part of national security strategy in the digital age.
