The CIA Triad is a foundational system used in the Cybersecurity field, and serves as a guide to protecting data or systems. It has three main components, hence the triad, that allow for superior security. Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability are the three components of the CIA Triad, they all work together to help organizations and companies keep their information safe and secure. “Confidentiality is roughly equivalent to privacy.” (Chai 1) It essentially makes sure that info is only accessible to authorized users, which helps prevent data leaks, spying, and breaches. Some methods used for the confidentiality component include, access control, encryption, and 2-factor authentication. “Integrity involves maintaining the consistency, accuracy and trustworthiness of data over its entire lifecycle.” (Chai 1) Its importance is focused on the composure of data and assets within the company. Their job is to ensure everything sent and received is not altered in any way without authorization. The goal is to prevent tampering, and corruption. Some methods used are hashing, and check sums. Finally the third component, “Availability, means information should be consistently and readily accessible for authorized parties.” (Chai 2) This helps deal with downtime, hardware failures, and DoS attacks. Methods used include making backups of sensitive data, disaster recovery planning, and system monitoring. The CIA Triad is an essential way to protect your business, or organization from Cyber Threats.
