Crizanlizumab works by targeting P-selection, a cell adhesion molecule expressed on the surface of activated endothelial cells and platelets. Ultimately, it prevents the vaso-occlusion and pain attacks that sickle cell patients often suffer from. This assignment helped me pair antigen classifications and how monoclonal antibodies are utilized to target specific pathways within the immune system to improve patient outcomes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>End of Course Reflection: <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>BIOL 302 Introduction to Immunology strengthened my understanding of key immunology concepts like antigen recognition and classification. Through this course, I was able to see the link between immunology and genetics when it comes to gene expression and disease susceptibility.  This information helped me understand how gene expression can inform which antigens individuals express.  Through assignments and lectures, I have honed my understanding of complex scientific processes like complement.  Additionally, I have gained a deeper appreciation for how immunology and genetics inform medical decision-making and patient care. A fact that decides the quality of care patients receive compared to patients whose physicians do not check every factor before deciding which medical route they would like to take to resolve a patient&#8217;s diagnosis.
