Assignment Takeaway #3
The third assignment we were required to complete was to look at blogs created by students who had studies abroad. For this assignment we were required to write a paper about a theme from the text found within their blog and how their perspective changed throughout their time in the location they were studying. The student I picked was Kailie Michalak. Kailie Michalak, she studied abroad in Tokyo, Japan in the year of 2019. Ichoose her blog because I want to learn about Tokyo, Japan from an American woman’s experience because my husband and I are getting stationed there next year.
From her blog I learned that it can be challenging forAmericans in Japan. She stated that her biggest struggle was that no matter how hard she tried to learn the culture, she was always treated as a foreigner. In another one of my courses we learned alot about stereotyping and racial stereotyping. I believe that Kailie was stereotyped as a foreigner because she looked American but in actuality she was half Japanese and spoke the language fluently. This makes me a little nervous because I’m not sure if I’m looking to be treated like a foreigner for 4 years while we are stationed there.
I choose this image because it is the main reason I choose Kailie’s blog. This image is of the Naval Base I will be living at next year in Yokosuka, Japan
