I personally have had many experiences with individuals specifically from German culture. My dad’s side of the family is originally from Germany and my second cousin still lives there. He is a professor of Anthropology at Heidelberg University. While visiting in 2017, I had a really hard time with the language and even with those who spoke English because their accent was so strong. With this being said I had to use facial expressions to help me where vocal expression was unknowledgeable. What I quickly learned is that their facial expressions were very similar to my own. Honestly I don’t know what I would have done without the knowledge of facial expressions because there were many times I thought I was being yelled at as their dialect sounded very harsh. I specifically remember my uncle talking to his neighbor. I thought they were having a serious conversation because of the way their dialect sounds but when looking at their facial expressions I could tell that they were having a civil/joking conversation.

I personally see no differences in facial expressions between individuals of different cultures. My experiences have led me to believe that but I have not had many of these experiences. I honestly couldn’t imagine going to Germany now or any other country with everyone wearing masks. With the mask there is absolutely no way I would be able to navigate my way through their language. Facial expressions show understanding, active listening, confusion, emotional state, and so much more. I believe that facial expressions are truly a language on their own.
