Parallel Major

After completing the alternative majors quiz, Nursing was number 1 on the list, but for an alternative major I chose Criminal Justice. I chose this parallel major because i have always found law enforcement and the justice system interesting and I always enjoyed crime TV such as “Criminal Minds” and “Law And Order.” This major interests me because I have always liked puzzles and the idea of being a detective was always intriguing to me. Some interesting facts about this major include that there are multiple areas that fall into the category of Criminal Justice including police, prosecution, judiciary, prisons, probation, and parole. Another interesting fact about Criminal Justice that I did not know was that the justice system is intended to punish AND rehabilitate, while I had originally believed that it was only to punish. One career that I would consider in this field would be a police detective. As a detective my job would be primarily a police officer, with the additional responsibilities of taking on long term cases to find higher level criminals. As a police detective I would most likely make around $81,490 a year, but it’s most likely a very stressful and dangerous job. A plan for pursuing this major could be to become a police officer first, then take the exam to become a detective. I would not need as many sciences as I am taking now for nursing, but would need more Criminal Justice focused classes like psychology and sociology. I could gain more professional experience in this field by taking part in ride alongs, where I would get to see first hand the action that comes with being a police officer. My advisor for this major would be Jessica Huffman.
