Embarking on the last half of my internship at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital has been with great pleasure. During this time, I have found more resources that will have a great impact on individuals with low-income dealing with diabetes in the Hampton Roads area. These resources include support groups, dental/vision care, continuous glucose monitors, help with insulin, and diabetes education. Support groups are found to increase motivation and self-esteem. They are also a proactive way to find support, help, tips and an integrated approach towards managing diabetes. Dental and vision care resources are provided as they are essential for prevention and early detection of diabetes-related complications.
Continuous glucose monitors are systems used to more effectively track glucose levels and improve A1C levels. These devices can be a critical resource for many individuals suffering with diabetes. During my internship, I learned that insulin can be very expensive and too costly for many patients. Hence, the reason why I have looked into and provided resources on insulin manufacturers that offer immediate assistance and long-term resources for insulin. Diabetes nutrition counseling, therapy and self-management education is the last resource provided among the resources listed in the handbook. This resource focuses on the importance of utilizing proper nutrition, medication and exercise. It promotes understanding and control of diabetes. Individualized care and education to those dealing with diabetes is necessary, and this resource provides that information.
After gathering all the resource information needed for the handbook, I designed the templates for each resource section and developed the handbook. After the handbook was completely finished, I was given the opportunity to share my research with real persons in the community dealing with diabetes. This internship has helped me realize the barriers and challenges faced by low-income individuals dealing with diabetes in the Hampton Roads. Not everyone knows the resources that are accessible to them to help them deal with their conditions. This is why I take pride in completing this assignment. My work will have a great impact on many of these individuals and will help steer them in the direction towards better health. I am beyond grateful for such an opportunity.
