What is a digital forensics analyst
As technology progresses by the day and continues to get more advanced, jobs are
needed to help in fields where technology is progressing, one avenue where this is happening is
within the forensics field, this is where digital forensics analyst comes in as they can use
technology to find information pertaining to crime. As a digital forensics analyst role can be
defined as “The role of the analyst is to recover data like documents, photos and e-mails from
computer hard drives and other data storage devices, such as zip and flash drives, that have been
deleted, damaged or otherwise manipulated. Analysts often work on cases involving offenses
committed on the Internet (‘cyber crime’) and examine computers that may have been involved in
other types of crime in order to find evidence of illegal activity.”(Perdue College of Science, n.d)
As this quote goes to highlight the role of digital forensics analyst as they are able to find the
digital evidence needed for crimes.
Digital forensics analyst and social sciences
Digital forensics analysts use social science practices within their jobs in many ways, but
some include using the principles of social sciences to better catch offenders, alongside using
archival research for in detail research. First would be using principles of social science and to
better catch offenders. As some of the principles of social science that are used by digital
forensics analysts include objectivity and determinism. First, objectivity can be defined as
studying topics with the objective of furthering the truth without bias. This must be done by
digital forensics analyst when studying crimes as they must remove bias when observing the
digital evidence found. Next, Determinism is the concept that behavior is influenced by events

that occurred earlier in time, suggesting that actions are predetermined by preceding
circumstances. This is used by digital forensics analysts when they are finding cyber offenders’
reason for committing a crime, as they must rely on determinism to an extent but not fully
relying on this principle for finding reasons for offending. These principles of social science help
better catch offenders as, they can use objectivity to better search through evidence, and use
determinism to better figure out why cyber offenders commit crimes to help better build the type
of person to offend. Next would be using archival research to better get an understanding of their
job field. First, archival research can be defined as “Archival research is research involving
primary sources held in an archives, a Special Collections library, or other repository. Archival
sources can be manuscripts, documents, records (including electronic records), objects, sound
and audiovisual materials, or other materials.”(Georgia State University,n.d.) As this is important
for digital forensic analysts as to better research cases, by being able to research past cases to get
an better understanding of the case they are undergoing.
Digital Forensics analyst impact on marginalized
groups and society
Finally, how digital forensics analysts impact marginalized groups alongside society. As
technology is progressing cyber offending and technology used in a crime have been happening
more and digital forensics analysts help by being able to find information that can pertain to
certain cases, especially in groups that tend to be most at risk for cyber victimization in addition
gives more roles for diversity in the cybersecurity field. First, as according to an insurance
website “Black, indigenous people and people of color (BIPOC) report a 5% higher rate of social
media hacking and a 6% higher rate of identity theft. The BIPOC population was also 12% less
likely to avoid devastating financial loss due to cyber crime. Unsurprisingly, these experiences

lead to a higher percentage of women and BIPOC populations feeling unsafe online relative to
other groups.”(bmessenger19, 2022) According to this source, it shows that minority groups
especially women tend to be the most victims of cybercrimes which leads to them feeling more
unsafe online. A digital forensic analyst can help people like this by helping find the evidence
and perpetrators of this crime so that they can feel safer online. Also, digital forensics analysts
can give the victims ways on how to secure their information and prevent cyber victimization,
which is when people are their own biggest weakness by not securing their own data.Next,
digital forencsis analyst can promote more diversity in the cybersecurity field. As, according to
Christopher Henry “Minorities comprise 26 percent of the cybersecurity workforce and only 21
percent of the overall workforce.”(Henry,2021) As this quote goes to highlight it shows the lack
of diversity in cybersecurity fields. But with more jobs opening in the cybersecurity field such as
digital forensics analyst it can promote more diversity. In addition, the way this job connects to
society is that digital forensics analyst also can find those who commit data breaches and give
their information to the authorities. This is important as after a breach, customers will lose faith
and trust within the company, but digital forensics analyst can help regain some trust by finding
the culprit associated with it and bring them to justice, as this will help regain some trust.
Conclusion
In conclusion, digital forensics analyst’s jobs are vast and contain many responsibilities
and require alot of skills for the job. In addition, they also require skills also used in social
science research, and a lot of there impact can be made towards minorities as they help find
evidence that would help get cyber offenders punished.
