I got the chance to interview Joe, a local newspaper sports reporter from Winchester, Virginia. Using that interview, I was able to create an infographic highlighting his career journey. This was a rewarding experience for me because I got to see first hand how someone came out of college and started their career path. As someone currently exploring sport communication, this real-world experience helped me gain knowledge beyond what I could just get from the classroom.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the interview, I was able to get into his head and learn how he started out all the way to where he is now. And it all started with a sole passion for sports, on top of his writing strengths. One thing that stood out to me was his initiative to take advantage of any opportunity that came his way, as well as combining sports media into this and building his knowledge as he grew. Overall, these conversations proved that it wasn\u2019t just one defining moment for his career, but a steady progression within many different areas to get to where he is now. Every experience and opportunity was a step towards the shaping of his career.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What also stuck with me was hearing about the variety within his roles. Despite what he specifically studied or where he ultimately wanted to end up, he took jobs covering high school games writing feature stories and managing different forms of media. This showed me that this whole field requires adaptability and the ability to be versatile in any situation. In my infographic, I wanted to show his entire journey, including personal balance and challenges, not just focus on his career. It\u2019s not just one skill needed to make it in sports communication, but a combination of many skills and areas that all come together.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a little challenging to condense everything from the interview questions into on page, it still may have ended up with too many words, but there wasn\u2019t any parts I wanted to leave out. Seeing all of this together in a clear, concise way with bullets, allowed me to target key points during his interview that I wanted to share. I chose key titles to focus on, and then elaborated the main points from each of his answers to put this all together. I wanted the main focus to show a vast variety of experiences, how well he was able to take on new challenges and not be afraid to try different things to get to where he is now. Nothing worth having comes easy, and you have to go through a lot to end up where you want to be, and then this is still every-evolving.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This whole process and project reinforced for me the importance of not just storytelling in sports journalism, but all the behind the scenes work involved. No matter what project you are working on, the goal is to provide engaging content that an audience is going to want to read and enjoy. Getting the chance to interview a local writer like Joe, made this experience more impactful for me, relating it to my own community and surroundings. Sports journalism plays a role at every level, and it\u2019s something that you can continue to work on and grow throughout your whole career.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
