Q: Review the articles linked with each individual motive in the presentation page or Slide #3. Rank the motives from 1 to 7 as the motives that you think make the most sense (being 1) to the least sense (being 7). Explain why you rank each motive the way you rank it.
A: There are seven main motives:
- Entertainment
- Political
- Revenge
- Boredom
- Recognition
- Money
- Multiple Reasons
This is how I would rank them to what makes the most sense to least:
- Revenge: This is rank #1, because more than likely crimes are caused due to the motive of revenge/ the feeling of the need for justice and just punishment. An eye for an eye.
- Money: In terms of cybercrime, It is fairly easy to make money, plus there is a low chance of receiving punishment/getting caught.
- Political: Many people feel that society/government is failing to either tell the truth and protect their citizens, so many join hacktivist groups to expose the wrongdoings of organizations, society, and governments
- Recognition: It makes sense in a way that perhaps some feel abandoned or not involved in society. So committing something like a cybercrime can bring some attention to feel wanted.
- Entertainment : There is a feeling of power when successfully committing a cybercrime, and people feel an adrenaline rush.
- Boredom: I put this in the same grade as the entertainment motive.
- Multiple reasons: There could be other motives besides the top six mentioned in this ranking. There could be psychological or socioeconomic factors but the top six make the most sense.
