How do engineers make cyber networks safer?

One way that engineers made cyber networks safer is by keeping them up to date. Keeping a network up to date could mean keeping all of the software updated to the latest version or reinforcing a network based on the newest vulnerabilities or attacks. Another way is that engineers use forums where people post about the latest breaches and attacks and others help to fix the problem. An example of this is the websites like cvedetails.com where people post about past and recent common vulnerability and exposures (CVEs). Engineers also use software like vulnerability scanners to find flaws in a system. Some vulnerability scanners might show open ports that a hacker could use to get into the network, therefore closing unneeded ports is very important. Engineers also design, implement, and update firewalls that prevent unwanted traffic from entering or leaving a business’s network.

What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?

Criminal justice and cybercrime overlap heavily. As in the name, cybercrime is often a crime and illegal, which means that the persons committing the cybercrime need to be punished. Punishing criminals for doing illegal things is part of what criminal justice is. In addition, cyber criminals commit many crimes that people commit not online. Cyber criminals participate in crimes like theft and fraud just as much, if not more, that people physically commit crimes. As cybercrime become more entangled in our every day life, it is also more likely to become entangled in other disciplines. One example of this is criminology. As aforementioned, people are committing just as many crimes online as physical crimes. While criminology may not focus much on cyber crime, it is likely to take more of a focus as everything begins to move online. Cyber crime is harder to track and criminals can make much more money off of it, therefore causing an incentive for criminals to shift to online crimes.
