The sport I chose to cover for this assignment was surfing. Surfing is my favorite non-team sport being born and raised at the beach my whole life. In both pictures, Kelly Slater is the athlete of focus. Slater is a surfing legend having won eleven world championships in the World Surf League when it was known as the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP). Essentially what happens is the top surfers from across the world comepte each year in a world tour and surf the best waves. The top picture is Kelly the year he won his first title in 1992. The second picture is of Slater at his surf ranch in 2019. The difference I noticed between the two photos are the vantage points at which they are taken. The 1992 photo might be taken from a camera on the beach, from a helicopter, or from on a boat. However, the 2019 shot is most likely taken from a photographer who is swimming in the wave pool with a water proof camera. It’s possible it’s taken from on a jetski but from what I know about the ranch and the based on how low to the surface the picture is taken, it would appear it was taken by a photographer in the water. This affects the impact of the image because the viewer is able to be closer to the action. You can still find newer pictures like the ’92 shot but its these water proof cameras that really give a viewer a new vantage point of what it’s like being in the water with these professionals. That being said, both pictures serve their purpose. I personally think viewers appreciate the closer shot because of how intimate the shot is; youre practically in the barrel with him. The difference really just comes from advancements in technology. Back in the 90’s, water proof cameras were astronomically expensive if not unheard of. But now the tech is here and it is absolutely utilized because of the beautiful shots people are able to get in both photo and video. Both images can be used on most to any social media platform. The most obvious for me would be instagram just bvecause instagram’s whole selling point is a photo sharing platform. But you’ll find shots like both of these on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest,
