Cyber Technologies
Cyber technologies have become increasingly commonplace in today’s world and are so much a part of our everyday lives. Our society has changed and adapted to use and almost be dependent on certain technologies. We must now adapt to this new norm and try to stay ahead of any potential risks associated with this influx of technology. With technology evolving, so do those who wish to use it for nefarious intents. Information and communication technologies are integrated into our lives, and we must be aware of what that means and how to protect ourselves.
Predictive Knowledge
When it comes to cyber-policy and infrastructure, it is critical to keep in mind that nothing is certain aside from the fact that everything will continue to change and evolve. Humans are constantly advancing, and so is our technology. This presents many new opportunities for trying to predict the future of technology and develop an acceptable and effective cyber-policy to combat any potential threats that could be accompanied with it. We can gain a better understanding of what is to come by studying what has already been as well as monitoring the new technology that is being developed and researched but not yet available. This gives us a somewhat reliable way to pick up on possible trends so that we can have a better idea of what may come to be in both the near and distant future. We must realize that this is not concrete and the things that are predicted may never come to be or may happen differently than expected. But we must do our best to adapt to the ever-changing technology so that we are prepared to mitigate possible risks and identify threats that may arise now and in the future so we are not caught off guard. One reasonably simple strategy for protecting our information and the availability of our systems is to have a backup of all data that is kept in a secure off-site location and regularly updated and tested for accuracy and accessibility. This would ensure that the information it contained would not be lost in the event of a malware attack or natural disaster, such as a fire or flood or something similar that would affect the main system. This would ensure that the off-site backup of our data systems would remain unharmed. I would also ensure that our systems were always up to date, both the software and hardware, along with backup generators in the event that a power outage shuts down our power supply. This would ensure that the equipment and operating systems were always equipped with the newest, most advanced security measures and allow us to take a proactive approach towards maintaining the security of our systems. This would also reduce the chance of hackers trying to infiltrate our systems since the newer technology is not as commonplace yet. All these protections would safeguard the data that we are trying to keep safe and accessible. This process satisfies the CIA Triad to ensure that our data is kept confidential, maintains its integrity, as well as guarantees its availability. This universal system will help us to navigate the changes that technology has on our society. We don’t yet know what the future of technology holds but we have tools and resources available to us to try and reasonably predict where technology is going and how it will affect out lives and the way that society works.
Technology and Society
Technology has grown in the past couple of decades to the point where it is almost impossible to live without it. Due to this eruption of social technologies, there are many things that must be considered in regard to the data that is collected and in turn shared with other people, businesses, and networks. We have technology integrated into our daily lives. Everything from smart phones to smart cars to smart refrigerators, and everything in between. If we are not careful, this will open the door for our personal information to be used and shared with others. One way that this can be mitigated is to restructure how our personal, business, and public data is stored and create new regulations for how and by who that data is accessed. Implementing a transparent opt-in process for information that is accessible by others is a great way for us to have a little more control over what information of ours is available to others. However, many people may still not be aware of what that opt-in consent truly entails. This provides us with the opportunity to adapt our education systems to encompass technology and information awareness. We must now incorporate this into our educational systems for school-aged children as well as adults. Having knowledge of what opt-in consent is and how it affects you and you personal information must be made a priority if we are going to implement and transparent opt-in system for data collection and distribution. Promoting self-regulation and the importance of it is one of the biggest things that we can do to protect ourselves as well as the information that is being accessed about us. Businesses must also be held accountable for the information they are collecting. New regulations will need to be constructed in order to ensure that businesses are only collecting the necessary information that they need in order for their business to function. Transparency will also need to become commonplace for patrons to fully understand what data is being collected and how it is being used.
Technology and Ethics
As with any topic, there comes the question of ethics. Ethics tell us what is right and wrong and provides us with a guide for the things we do. When it comes to technology, ethics can become complicated. There are many varying opinions regarding the ethical considerations surrounding new technology. One significant concern involves biotechnology. Biotechnology is a newer field of technology that is focused on integrating technological and biological factors, such as CRISPR Gene Editing. This biotechnology provides us with the ability to edit our DNA and by doing so may help cure diseases or illnesses. It also gives people the opportunity to change superficial aspects about themselves or their future children, such as eye color, hair color, and potentially even their gender. This is a major concern for a lot of people who feel that this is unethical, and we should not use technology to change the things about us that are naturally occurring, even if it means that it can also help to saves lives and improve our overall quality of life. Since this is a somewhat new field and also quite controversial, it will impact society in both positive and negative ways. New regulations should be set in order to help mitigate these new changes in technology that are going to affect society in the near future. This is where our predictive knowledge comes into play. We know that this is going to happen because we see the progress that has already been made, however, we do not know exactly how far it will go or how long it will take to get there.
Conclusion
Ultimately, society will be affected by technology no matter what we do or neglect to do. It is up to us to grow and adapt to it to the best of our ability. We must stay vigilant in protecting our data by being aware of the many ways that our information can be accessed and shared with others. Educating the general public about the risks associated with technologies and the options that are available to them is our best source of protecting our data from falling into the wrong hands or being used in ways that we do not want or consent to. Social technologies are so much a part of our lives and will only continue to grow throughout the next decade, that is why we must be aware of the impact it has on our lives and know the options we have for protecting ourselves and our personal data.
